IVF Q & A

What is IVF?

In vitro fertilization, often referred to as IVF, is a type of assisted reproductive technology. It involves extracting healthy eggs from a woman’s body, retrieving sperm samples, and then manually combining the two to create an embryo in a lab. After an embryo is considered viable, it’s transferred into the woman’s uterus.

IVF allows couples who were once considered infertile to have healthy pregnancies. At Pure OBGYN, the physicians offer a range of fertility services to ensure that IVF works for you.

How does the IVF process work?

Before you start IVF, you meet with a fertility specialist at Pure OBGYN. You may need a variety of tests and screenings, including:

  • Ovarian reserve testing (to determine the quality of your eggs)
  • A semen analysis from your partner
  • Tests for infectious diseases
  • Uterine cavity exam

Your physician might also recommend a “mock” embryo transfer, so they can determine how and where to place the actual embryo to give you the best chance of success.

One cycle of IVF can take about two weeks, which includes:

  • Ovulation induction to stimulate the release of one or several eggs
  • Egg retrieval
  • Sperm retrieval
  • Fertilization
  • Transfer of the embryo to your uterus

What are the results of IVF?

In vitro fertilization results are different for every woman. The success of the procedure depends on a variety of factors, including your age, health history, lifestyle factors, and the cause of your infertility.

For women under 35, the live birth rate for each IVF cycle started is up to 43%, while it’s up to 27% for women between 38 to 40. For women over 40, the success rate may be up to 18% for each IVF cycle started.

Your physician at Pure OBGYN works with you on an individualized basis to help you achieve the best outcomes. While the IVF process can sometimes be a long journey, the Pure OBGYN team has successfully helped many couples who didn’t think they could get pregnant.
